On 2/6/20, I attended and helped lead the eCourses Best Practices Brown Bag Lunch. Glenda Chagolla and I discussed some potential topics to list on our agenda as a back up plan, but we planned on seeking input and remaining flexible so that all of the attendees could benefit. When people walked into the room, we asked them for a successful strategy that they currently use and then we all took turns sharing ideas. I shared a feature that helps students see recent announcements and my strategies for utilizing the gradebook messaging system. Overall the event was a big success. We received good feedback and there were a few aha moments and helpful brainstorming opportunities.
Lori Walk shared a strategy that I would like to incorporate in my online classes. She sends students around campus on a "Scavenger Hunt" to familiarize them with the campus and offers extra credit if they leave a note under her office door. I like this idea because it can help online students feel connected to the campus and having my students leave a note under my office door would ensure that they know where my office is. This activity could help familiarize students with the resources on campus and encourage them to visit me if they have any questions or need any help. I feel it is important for online students to build relationships and feel like they belong on campus. Even though they may not be on campus everyday, I want them to feel connected and supported.
