I reached out to the physical education department at Glendale High School to develop a partnership. Currently, students taking weight lifting at Glendale High School complete workouts and set goals throughout the year, but they do not do any formal fitness assessments to track progress. To provide them with assessment data, and provide GCC's Exercise Science students with an opportunity to practice conducting assessments and communicating with clients, we hosted Pretesting on 9/25/19, in our Sports Performance Lab.
I had the opportunity to practice planning which included reserving a space, recruiting volunteers, getting activity waivers approved by administration, and communicating with the physical education teachers at Glendale High School.
For the pretesting, we had 23 students and everything went smoothly. I really enjoyed watching our Exercise Science students in action. They did a great job of applying all of the concepts they have learned in their classes.
When I asked Glendale High School's physical education teachers for feedback, they said that some of their students did not understand what all of their assessment results meant. This feedback was really helpful because I now know that I need to spend additional time working with my student to enhance their communication skills. I want them to feel comfortable and confident explaining all of the assessment results in a way that their client can understand. This will be a very important skill when they are working in the field. My goal is that spending additional time practicing communicating will enhance the post testing experience for my students and for the high school students they are working with.
