Hello Mission Valley Elementary Families,
If you missed our first Prinicpal/Counselor Community Chat last month please take a look at the slide presentation. We provided important information about our PBIS program, student discipline, and counseling resources.
We are in the final weeks of our annual Busy Beaver fundraiser. We have had an amazing response so far and truly appreciate your consideration and generosity. As of September 24th we are at 75% of our goal! There is still time to donate. Please read through the information in this newsletter for the status update and instructions on how to donate.
Fall season has begun and the daylight hours are shortening. In typical California fashion the weather changes daily! Please help prepare our students by sending them to school with appropriate clothing, layers, and a full bottle of water. We are experiencing extreme heat and changing air quality conditions this first week of October. To minimize the impact of the heat and poor air quality on students and staff:
We will cancel or move outdoor activities indoors between 10:00am - 5:00pm to the extent possible.
Windows and doors will remain closed to maintain healthy air quality indoors.
HVAC and air filtration systems will be used where possible to improve indoor air.
This month we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage, Diwali, amd Halloween. A huge thank you to MVSA for coordinating these events and helping foster an appreciation for the diverse Mission Valley community. Volunteers are welcome so please consider signing up to lend a hand and make these events extra special for our students!
Let's have a great year! For any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to check out our school website or Parent Square for the most current information regarding events, schedules, and contact information. You can also read the scrolling messages on our marquee near the valet entrance. GO BEAVERS!

We will celebrate our school spirit, our health, and the environment with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program. Swing by the tables in the valet area in front of school to report your mode of transportation and pick a prize! With your family and friends, you can participate by:
Taking a walk, or riding a bike, skateboard, or scooter
Biking with your child on their own or with a trail-a-bike
Taking the bus with your child and walking to and from the bus stop
Post a fun photo on social media to celebrate the day! Remember to tag @AlamedaCoSR2S on X/Twitter with #WalkandRoll23 and #IWR2SD, and post on Facebook at facebook.com/saferoutestoschool.
We look forward to walking and rolling with you!
Join Mission Valley and millions of people worldwide on Thursday, October 17th at 10:17am in practicing a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill and other earthquake safety actions. Learn more at ShakeOut.org/howtoparticipate.
Parents please avoid approaching campus during the drill. Office staff will not be able to pull students leaving early for appointments at this time.
Mission Valley staff and volunteers will be conducting traffic surveys during the month of October. Survey participants will tally parking, moving, and pedestrian violations in four areas in the front of school. Shifts for volunteers will be in the mornings and afternoons for 15 minutes. The purpose of the surveys is to establish a baseline average of violations/risks. Moving forward the Mission Valley Safety Committee will use the data to put in place reasonable action plans designed to eliminate or mitigate risk.
We are looking for volunteers to help conduct the survey. There are two morning shifts and four afternoon slots lasting 15-20 minutes. Please complete this survey by October 21st to sign up for one or more shifts. Contact Principal McClintock at jmcclintock@fusdk12.net if you have further questions.
The "Lost & Found" is located in the corridor between the office and room 1. There are hooks on the outside office wall full of sweatshirts, jackets, hats, lunch bags, and water bottles. If your student is missing an item please check this area and claim your belongings. Items are removed and donated periodically. We will notify students and families before donating any items. If you lost a set of keys, watch, jewelry, or other small items you can check with office staff to see if it was turned in. As a reminder, the school is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
Our annual Halloween Parade will occur on Thursday, October 31 during the school day. This will be an outdoor event for staff and students. Teachers will share more information as we get closer to the date.
Halloween Costumes: Dressing for Halloween is a fun and festive part of October that many of our students and staff are looking forward to. The following guidelines have been created for those who choose to dress up for Halloween on Thursday, October 31 (not required):
If students are going to wear a costume, they must wear it to school. Students will not be permitted to change into their costumes or apply makeup or hairspray at school. All costume preparations must be completed at home. Students must be able to wear their costume inside or outside, at recess, and during P.E.
Costumes must not interfere with learning, movement or using the restroom (no adult support will be available at school to assist with costumes).
Dress code- all regular Fremont Unified dress code policies apply. On this day only, students may wear hats inside as part of their costumes.
Violence – no pretend “prop” weapons such as guns, knives, or swords, and no blood or gore
Age Appropriateness – costumes cannot promote the use of drugs, alcohol, or violence of any kind
Consideration of others – costumes must not make fun of others or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, or religion
Students who wear costumes that do not conform to the costume guidelines will be asked to change their clothing or call home to acquire an appropriate alternative.
We have several exciting events and study trips coming up and are thrilled to welcome back parent volunteers for the 2024-2025 school year! All volunteers must:

Volunteers that are transporting students must submit proof of insurance
CiviCore applications are good for 1 year and all FUSD children (even if at different schools)
Sign in and out at the office
Wear a visitor badge at all times
For more information, please see the Volunteer Page of the FUSD Website.
Families at Mission Valley may enroll their child in a before and after school extended day program with the YMCA. Families with students who are designated in one or more specific categories (English learners, foster youth, homeless students, migrant students, and students who are free or reduced-price meal eligible) may be eligible to participate in the YMCA Program at Mission Valley at no cost through the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P). Please submit the ELO-P application to determine eligibility and visit the FUSD ELO-P website for details or contact Zeah Izaz at zizaz@ymcaestbay.org.
All students are eligible for one free breakfast meal and one lunch meal this school year. Breakfast is served in the multiuse room daily from 7:45-8:10am. Drop off your student in the front of school or valet. Students will follow the signs and walk down the main hallway to the multiuse room. After eating and cleaning up, students will head out to the blacktop and be in line by the start bell (grades TK-K 8:10am, 1-5 8:20am).
The lunch break for grades 3-5 is from 11:00-11:45am. Kindergarten is from 11:45am-12:25pm and grades 1-2 from 11:45am-12:30pm. After eating and cleaning up, students will go to the blacktop and play structures for recess.
If students forget lunches and water bottles you can leave them in the "lunch cart" in front of the office by 10:30am daily. The cart will be delivered to the multiuse room before lunchtime and it is the student's responsibility to retrieve their items. Students who forget to bring lunch may receive a free school lunch. Students should bring a pre-filled water bottle to school daily and may refill water bottles at our refilling stations as needed.
