Hello Mission Valley Elementary Families,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I hope your summer break has been enjoyable and you had many opportunities for rest and relaxation. All of us at Mission Valley look forward to welcoming our students and community back to school. Consistent with recent years, we are committed to elevating opportunities for all students by providing interventions, enrichment, social-emotional learning opportunities, and character education. As we count down to August 17th, the first day of school, I would like to introduce myself and outline key information and dates.

I am excited and honored to serve our community as the new Principal of Mission Valley Elementary School. Most of my 20 plus years in education have been spent in the Fremont Unified School District. In addition to teaching Spanish, I was an English Learner Liaison, volleyball coach, and Acting Principal. Most recently I was the Assistant Principal of Walters Middle School for the past seven years. Working at the same site for 18 years was a blessing and the relationships I built with colleagues and the community are essential to the work we do as educators each day. I am committed to working in partnership with our families and truly look forward to meeting and getting to know each of you. I believe that learning is a lifelong process and I am excited to bring my experience, openness to learn, and student-centered approach to Mission Valley.

We invite you a fun event to kick off the 2022-2023 school year! We're bringing back "Chalk the Walks" on August 16th from 4:00-6:00pm. Join us and spread positive vibes with chalked messages welcoming our staff and students back to school. Please note that our first Principal's Coffee hosted by our wonderful Mission Valley Student Association has been rescheduled. The new date and time will be communicated shortly.

As the school year commences, new opportunities for supporting Mission Valley will be communicated. At this time, our most urgent need of support include:

  • School Site Council Parent/Community Membership Involvement

  • English Language Advisory Committee Membership

  • Additional Noon Supervisors

  • MVSA (Parent Club) participation, membership, and financial contribution

For any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to check out our school website for the most current information regarding events, schedules, and contact information. Let's have an amazing year! GO BEAVERS!

At-Home COVID-19 Test Kits

FUSD is participating in a state program to provide free at-home test kits to each preK-12 student (ages 2+) and staff member for use before the first day of school to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The kits will be distributed on Thursday, August 11th from 12:00-4:00pm. Families should drive through the pick up/drop off loop in the front of school. Remain inside your vehicle and pull up all the way to the staff member distributing the kits. Kits will be available for students enrolled at Mission Valley only. Siblings at other schools will need to participate in that site's distribution.

Participation in this program is optional. FUSD will not require proof of a negative test for students or staff. However, students or staff with a positive test result, any COVID-19 symptoms, and/or a known exposure to someone with COVID-19 must follow our student flowchart or staff flowchart before returning to campus.

First Day of School for 2022-2023 School Year – Wednesday, August 17th, 2022

BP/AR 5113.1 – Students Must Be Present the First Day of School

All students must attend live instruction on the first day of school, August 17, 2022. Students who do not attend the first day of school will be dropped and will not be guaranteed a seat at their school and may have to be overloaded to another school if classrooms at their school are filled. The only exception will be students who are absent due to illness. If a student is absent the first day due to illness, parents/guardians must notify the school every day the student is absent. Seats will NOT be held for students on extended vacations or other optional activities, whether or not the school is notified.

Board Policy 5111.1 states that if you move, you must notify the school prior to or within 5 days of any changes in residency. If you don’t, your enrollment may be revoked.

Teacher Day from Fremont Flowers - August 16

Office Business and Visitor Policy

When possible our office staff prefers to support parents and families via email or phone. Please be sure your child(ren) has all of their belongings (backpack, lunch, water bottle, etc) upon school arrival. We will not call classrooms or deliver items during class as this is a disruption to instruction.

All visitors must be pre-approved by the teacher and principal. All visitors must be fully vaccinated. All visitors must check in at the office prior to going into a classroom.

Communication from School

School communication will be sent primarily thru email and posted on the school website. Be sure to update your email in the online MAZE day forms to receive important communication from the school. Please access our web page at https://missionvalley.fremont.k12.ca.us/ to find the school calendar, schedule, and important announcements. Newsletters are emailed and posted online monthly.

Voluntary Classroom Supply Lists

Here is the 2022-2023 Voluntary Classroom Supply List. Items on this list are suggested by teachers and your contributions are greatly appreciated. Materials should be sent to school with students during the first week of school.

COVID-19 Safety and Protocols

As a reminder, it is extremely important that if your child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms they must be kept home and get tested. Symptoms include:

  • Fever (above 100.0 degrees) or chills

  • Sore throat

  • Cough

  • New loss of taste or smell

  • Headache

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Congestion or runny nose

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle or body aches

If your child will be absent, please promptly report the absence. If you have tested your child, please wait until you have results before you send your child to school. If they test positive, please keep your child home and follow the guidelines as directed on the COVID-19 Flowchart. More information can be found on the FUSD Parent/Student COVID protocols page.

Masks

Masks are strongly recommended to be worn inside FUSD facilities.

For 10 days after known exposure, and for 10 days after infection if completing a shortened isolation, masks are:

  • Required for staff

  • Strongly recommended for students

Masks for students and staff are available in the school office.

Masks will be required for staff in the event of outbreaks as determined by ACPHD under Cal/OSHA guidance.

COVID-19 Testing

FUSD will continue to provide testing opportunities to our staff and students, with an increased emphasis on antigen testing, per recommendations in the CDPH Testing Framework for K–12 Schools for the 2022–2023 School Year.

FUSD will continue to implement testing requirements for unvaccinated employees set forth in the State Public Health Officer Order of August 11, 2021.

Notifications

FUSD will provide timely notifications of on-campus exposures as the District is informed of positive cases.

The following notifications continue to be required:

  • General/Site notices to staff

  • Exposure/Close contact notifications for staff

Additionally, FUSD will provide the following for our community:

  • Exposure notifications to parents/guardians (group tracing)

  • A simplified summary of self-reported COVID-19 positive cases with on-campus exposures, updated weekly

Breakfast, Lunch, and Water Bottles

Free breakfast will be available for students starting at 7:55am daily in the multi-use room. Lunch will continue to be free for the 2022-2023 school year. Students may also bring lunch from home. Students will eat lunch at designated times according to the bell schedule. Select classes will eat their lunches in the outdoor eating area allowing other classes who will eat in the multi-use room to spread out appropriately.

Students should bring a pre-filled water bottle to school daily. Students may refill water bottles at our refilling station as needed.

If students forget lunch items you can leave them on the "lunch cart" in the office by 10:30am daily. The cart will be delivered to the multiuse room before lunchtime. Students who forget to bring lunch may receive a free school lunch.

Attendance and Tardies

Daily attendance and being on time are crucial factors in how successful children are in school. You are helping your children to set lifelong patterns when you prioritize their attendance in school and their arrival on time. Tardies interfere with instruction in the classroom, both in terms of the time the student is missing from the classroom and the disruption the student causes when he/she arrives. Education Code 48260.5 has strict guidelines for families to follow when truancy (absences) or tardies are a concern. A letter will be sent home to notify you when your child’s attendance record begins to suffer. Please help us to help your child learn responsible work habits by getting them to school on time every day.

After School Care and Enrichment

On-site after school care and enrichment will be offered to Mission Valley students. Please read the Kiducate flyer for fall registration information and enrollment applications. More information is available on the Kiducate Academy website.

Noon Duty Supervisors Needed

Paid and Volunteer Positions are available for the 2022-2023 School Year! We are looking to add additional noon supervisors at Mission Valley Elementary School. The position would be daily from 11:05am- 12:35. If you are interested, please contact Jacyln McClintock (jmcclintock@fusdk12.net).
