Hello Mission Valley Elementary Families,
January was a fantastic month full of field trips, the Great Kindness Challenge, and basketball games. We see students working hard in their classrooms and making good progress on the standards. Our teachers continue to deliver social emotional learning lessons through the Second Step curriculum. Counselor Tamana visited classrooms to review school expectations and our PBIS program. We are grateful for our families for your continued support of our students' growth and reinforcing school expectations.
The wet weather is here and we need your help keeping our community safe. We understand that mornings can be hectic for families so please do your best to plan ahead for on-time arrival to school. Students are expected to be on their blacktop numbers when the bell rings at 8:20am. Our staff strives to create a safe campus but we cannot do it alone. We are seeing students dropped off in intersections, cars blocking driveways and crosswalks, illegal u-turns and left turns, and impatient drivers maneuvering around others. Let's slow down in the school zone, abide traffic laws, and take care of each other.
For any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to check out our school website for the most current information regarding events, schedules, and contact information. You can also read the scrolling messages on our marquee near the valet entrance. GO BEAVERS!
Jacyln McClintock, Principal

Three B's Ticket - Monthly Raffle
Who knows what the "three B's" are at Mission Valley? MV staff are committed to creating a safe learning environment where all students feel connected to school. Staff often recognize students with reward tickets for showing the three B's. Tickets are collected in every classroom and at the end of the month we hold a schoolwide raffle and pull two winners for each grade level. Winning students' names are posted on the digital marquee in the front of school and are invited to a special reward activity with Principal McClintock during lunch recess. Congratulations to our January raffle winners:
Kindergarten - Erik C and Yuexi Z
First grade - Xichen F and Akshara V
Second grade - Monaza A and Manuel M
Third grade - Jasravi K and Isabella N
Fourth grade - Andrew J and Eesha K

Both students also won free yearbooks! All other submissions will be featured on the contest page.

Attendance
It’s a myth that only unexcused absences are causes for concern. Health-related absences may be marked as excused, yet time away from the classroom is a lost opportunity to learn and make connections. There are steps families and schools can take to try to limit health-related absences. We worked with a number of national health organizations on guidance that clearly communicates that students can attend with minor illnesses, and discusses when kids should stay home and seek advice from a health provider. For guidance as to when to keep your child home, please see Health Guidance for Going to School.
Young Authors Contest
We’re so proud of all our students that participated in this year’s Young Authors Contest. Their creativity and hard work shined bright and students represented Mission Valley well! Congratulations to each of our grade level winners…
Kindergarten - Srivansh P with “Earth Super Heroes”
First Grade - Saanvi P with “Let’s Play!”
Second Grade - Lavina L with“Cupcake the Superhero!”
Third Grade - Jahnvi R with “Berry’s New Friend”
Fourth Grade - Tiana G with “Lost in Texas” and
Fifth Grade - Ishani K with “Unmasking the Alien!”
All winners will be recognized by the Fremont Unified School Board at the February 28th meeting. Great job!
English Language Proficiency for California (ELPAC)
Every Year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, classwork, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. You can use the results to identify where your child is doing
well and where they might need more support.
Initial & Summative ELPAC
Students who have a home language survey that lists a language other than English will take the initial test, which identifies students as an English learner student or as initially fluent in English. Students who are classified as English learner students will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are
reclassified as proficient in English.
What is the test format? Both the Initial and Summative ELPAC are computer-based.
Which standards are tested? The 2012 California English Language Development Standards.
Alternate ELPAC
Students whose IEP identifies the use of an alternate assessment and who have a home language survey that lists a language other than English will take the Alternate Initial ELPAC, which identifies students as an English learner student or as initially fluent in English. Students who are classified as English learner students will take the Alternate Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English.
What is the test format? Both the Alternate Initial and Alternate Summative ELPAC are computer-based.
Which standards are tested? Alternate achievement standards derived from the 2012 California English Language Development Standards.
