Hello Mission Valley Elementary Families,

Last month we hosted our first Principal/Counselor Community Chat. Please visit the presentation link if you would like to learn more about Mission Valley's PBIS program and school counseling services. We are asking for your help to plan for future Community Chats. To help us understand our community’s needs and interests better please complete this survey by Friday, October 13, 2023. We would like to know the best time of day most families can attend meetings, preferred communication methods, and topics of interest.

The MVSA's Busy Beaver Fundraiser continues! Thank you to those families that have already turned in donations. The Busy Beaver is the main fundraiser for the year that supports our school with technology, classroom materials, assemblies, student programs, and more. Please review the flyer in this newsletter with current updates from MVSA. The fundraiser ends on October 26, 2023.

For any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to check out our new school website for the most current information regarding events, schedules, and contact information. You can also read the scrolling messages on our marquee near the valet entrance. GO BEAVERS!

Celebrate International Walk and Roll to School Day!

Join Mission Valley Elementary School for International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 4, 2023! We will celebrate our school spirit, our health, and the environment with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program. Swing by the tables in the valet area in front of school to report your mode of transportation and win a prize! With your family and friends, you can participate by:

Post a fun photo on social media to celebrate the day! Remember to tag @AlamedaCoSR2S on X/Twitter with #WalkandRoll23 and #IWR2SD, and post on Facebook at facebook.com/saferoutestoschool.

We look forward to walking and rolling with you!

Attendance

It’s a myth that only unexcused absences are causes for concern. Health-related absences may be marked as excused, yet time away from the classroom is a lost opportunity to learn and make connections. There are steps families and schools can take to try to limit health-related absences. We worked with a number of national health organizations on guidance that clearly communicates that students can attend with minor illnesses, and discusses when kids should stay home and seek advice from a health provider. For guidance as to when to keep your child home, please see Health Guidance for Going to School.

Please continue to contact the school office to report your child's absence. It is also helpful to send communication to the classroom teacher as well.

Noon Duty Supervisors Needed for 2023-2024

We have an immediate need for noon supervisors for breakfast service from 7:40-8:25am. If you are interested please contact the front office or Jacyln McClintock and we will walk you through the application process.

English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) Update

We had our first ELAC meeting in September and were very happy to see so many parents in attendance and participating actively. Here is the ELAC agenda for your reference. There are resources linked to the agenda that you can review at your convenience.

We are still in need of an ELAC chairperson and DELAC parent representative. The ELAC Chairperson attends the remaining three school meetings. The DELAC parent representative attends the district meetings that are currently held on Zoom. Please reach out to Principal McClintock if you can fill either of these roles for Mission Valley. It is vital that Mission Valley has parent representation on these committees.

The remaining Mission Valley ELAC meeting dates are December 5, February 6, and April 9. Currently meetings are held from 3:00-4:00pm.

The Fremont Unified DELAC meetings are held from 6:00-7:00pm via Zoom on October 23, December 4, February 12, and April 15.

Multilingual Learner Parent/Guardian Survey

We invite parents and guardians of multilingual learner students to participate in a survey Your responses will help us understand our multi language learner community’s needs and interests better. Please respond by Friday, October 27, 2023. We would like to know the best time of day most families can attend meetings and topics of interest. Thank you for taking the time to provide your response.

Donations

We are looking for donations of copy paper to support classrooms and the office. Any quantity of 8 1/2 x 11 white copy paper is welcomed. Please drop your donations off on the palet in the corridor next to the office. If you have a large donation please call the office to coordinate the delivery. Thanks in advance!

Forgotten Items, Lunches, and Water Bottles

We understand that mornings can be hectic and occasionally students forget things at home. If you need to drop off an item (ie. homework, sweatshirt, etc) for a student please email the teacher so they are aware the student needs to come to the office. Leave the item labeled with the student's name and classroom number on the credenza in the school office. The office will not interrupt classes during instructional time with phone calls or deliveries. It is up to the family to communicate and the student to pick up the item.

If students forget lunch items you can leave them on the "lunch cart" in the office by 10:30am daily. The cart will be delivered to the multiuse room before lunchtime. Students who forget to bring lunch may receive a free school lunch.  Students should bring a pre-filled water bottle to school daily. Students may refill water bottles at our refilling stations as needed.

Halloween Dressing and Celebration Guidelines

A Halloween Parade will occur on Tuesday, October 31 during the school day. This will be an outdoor event for staff and students. Teachers will share more information as we get closer to the date.

Halloween Costumes: Dressing for Halloween is a fun and festive part of October that many of our students and staff are looking forward to. The following guidelines have been created for those who choose to dress up for Halloween on Tuesday, October 31 (not required):

Elementary Poster Contest

The Mineta Transportation Institute of San José State University is preparing for another Elementary Poster Contest which allows students nationwide (grades 1-6) to convey their knowledge of safe, affordable, and sustainable alternative transportation modes to passenger cars through an artistic, visually compelling image. This year’s theme is #VisionZero2030. The deadline to submit a poster is December 8, 2023.

Six winners—three from grades 1-3 and three from grades 4-6—will earn a cash prize in the form of a gift card and have their posters displayed in the Mineta Transportation Institute’s monthly newsletter and at our Annual Banquet at San José State University in June 2024. All prizes must be claimed by the end of the academic school year in which the entries were made.

Please feel free to contact alverina.weinardy@sjsu.edu if you have any questions or would like more information on the contest.
