Hello Mission Valley Elementary Families,
Happy New Year and welcome to 2023! I hope winter break brought our students and families all that you needed to start off the year with a bang!
It is with great pleasure and pride that I share with our community some wonderful news. State Superintendent of Education, Tony Thurmond, announced that Mission Valley was selected for the 2023 California Distinguished Schools Program. What an exceptional honor for our students, staff, and community! Thank you for your continued teamwork, communication, and dedication to supporting high levels of learning for all our students. None of this would be possible without you and we all deserve this great recognition! For more information please click on the news release.
As we continue in the second trimester now is the perfect time to review our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) "3 Be's" with our students. You may have noticed our monthly 3 Be's drawing winners posted on the school marquee. We are happy to recognize three lower grade and three upper grade students that have shown what it means to "Be Responsible," "Be Respectful," and "Be a Problem Solver." Families will continue to receive Friday weekly notes for students, so please ask them about the Fun Friday activities they earned. Students that have difficulties demonstrating the 3 Be's consistently may receive an "Oops" ticket that will also be reflected in the weekly communication.
For any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to check out our school website for the most current information regarding events, schedules, and contact information. You can also read the scrolling messages on our marquee near the valet entrance. GO BEAVERS!

Ms. Srinivasan Receives a Grant
We're so proud of Ms. Srinivasan! She was one of six Fremont teachers that received a mini grant from the California Retired Teachers Association, Division #91. The $200 grant was used to fund a new project teaching 4th graders about vision and light. Congratulations!
Yearbook Cover Contest
This year we had nearly 40 entries for our Yearbook Cover Contest! Participating students produced such wonderfully creative and artistic designs. Mission Valley staff voted for their favorite entries and the top two artists that received the most votes were declared the winners. Please join me in congratulating our second place winner, Adrianna L, and first place winner, Allison L! Their designs will be featured on the front and back covers of the yearbook. All other designs will be published in the yearbook as well.
Mission Valley Spelling Bee
We are so proud of all our Spelling Bee participants. Congratulations to our top two school spellers, Ishaan G and Koyel D! They will represent Mission Valley and the FUSD Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 17th at 6:00pm at Weibel Elementary. Wishing them luck at the district contest!
SEL Parent Workshop
Families are welcome to join FUSD counselors' presentation of "Helping your Child Develop Emotional Intelligence" on Thursday, January 19th at 6:30pm. For your convenience the presentation will be held virtually via Zoom. This is a wonderful opportunity to network with other families and learn how to support your student's development at school and home.

Attendance and Tardies
Daily attendance and being on time are crucial factors in how successful children are in school. You are helping your children to set lifelong patterns when you prioritize their attendance in school and their arrival on time. Tardies interfere with instruction in the classroom, both in terms of the time the student is missing from the classroom and the disruption the student causes when he/she arrives. Education Code 48260.5 has strict guidelines for families to follow when truancy (absences) or tardies are a concern. A letter will be sent home to notify you when your child’s attendance record begins to suffer. Please help us to help your child learn responsible work habits by getting them to school on time.
Just a few reminders:
Breakfast service is from 7:55-8:15am daily in the multiuse room.
Students that arrive before 8:10am should wait in the designated hallway areas near rooms 1, 6, 12, and 20 until supervision begins. Alternatively, they can go to the multiuse room for breakfast.
Student supervision in the morning starts at 8:10am. The staff on duty will escort students to the blacktop for recess.
School starts at 8:20am every day. Students that arrive tardy after 8:25am should report to the office and obtain a tardy slip before proceeding to their classrooms.

BOOST Homework Help
The Compassion Network in Fremont is offering after school homework help beginning February 14, 2023. Qualifying low income families with students in 1st-5th grades are invited. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:30pm through April 4, 2023. Please contact the Compassion Network office at (510)796-7378 for more information.
Reminder: Health & Safety Protocols
Please remember to complete the daily health screener before students enter campus, and keep students home when they are ill. The cold, flu and other viruses are circulating in our community, and it remains important to test for COVID-19 when symptoms are present. Masks are strongly recommended indoors, and are available in school front offices.
COVID Testing for Staff and Students
FUSD continues to offer COVID testing to all Mission Valley Elementary students from 8:00 - 11:30AM in room 1. All students that wish to participate in testing this year will have to fill out a new waiver. Each school has an updated link here. COVID testing will continue to be available at the district office Monday-Friday from 7:00AM - 3:00PM.

We are looking to add additional noon supervisors at Mission Valley Elementary School. The hours are from 11:05am- 12:35 daily. If you are interested, please contact the front office or Jacyln McClintock (jmcclintock@fusdk12.net) and we will walk you through the application process.
