Last year in August I left Finland for a year in the United States, Idaho to be more exact. Being an alpine skier, a mountain town called Sun Valley couldn’t have been more perfect. I was enrolled in a boarding program, meaning I lived with around 20 other students. My favorite thing about living in a dorm was always being around my friends, although they could get annoying at times, too. There were some awesome people that I got to meet, and as a community, the place was just something else. Everybody was nice and a lot more social than we’re used to here in Finland, so getting to know people was really easy.

The school I went to offered a bunch of outdoor trips and activities, including camping trips as well as hikes in the mountains of Idaho and the deserts of Utah. A few nights in a tent during a snow- or sandstorm really taught me a lot about camping in nature. During the ski season, we traveled a lot with the team and I got the opportunity to see some incredible places in the PacificW. I’m extremely happy that I chose to experience something different, and personally, I would recommend an exchange year to anybody who’s at all interested in one. I learned and did so many things, and there’s still so much left to learn and do.
