Job shadowing in Mattliden proves valuable for new STUCO members
Job shadowing was a mandatory day in which every student would apply to a job and spend a day at the workplace. The point of this is to introduce the student to a normal day at a workplace or profession of their choice so that they would gain working life skills and knowledge of working life. The student gains valuable skills in applying to a workplace and as the students observes another employee performing the role
Daniel Björklund and Elias Ånäs, new members of the student council, have agreed to give the Bulletin team some insight about where they spent their job shadowing day.
Daniel had the privilege of spending his day with Jukka Mäkelä, the mayor of Espoo. During that time he got to witness him during three different meetings about the internal administration of Espoo. Daniel tells the Bulletin that this was very fascinating and also a great opportunity for him to learn about how the city which he lives in is run. He points out that Mäelä drank an exceptional amount of coffee, five cups in the morning. Daniel says that he then got a private dinner with the mayor in which he had the opportunity to ask him questions regarding administrative work, overall Daniel says that the job shadowing day was very inspiring and interesting for him.
Elias did his Job Shadowing with Nasima Razmyar, one of the deputy mayors in Helsinki. She represents the Social Democratic Party and is responsible for education in Helsinki. Elias says he chose to “shadow” her partly due to her being one of the only people who gave him an affirmative answer, but also because of her impressive career and even more impressive persona. She has, among other things, won the prize for being the most influential woman of foreign descent in 2010 (Vuoden pakolaisnainen). Elias describes her as one of the most empathetic people he's ever met. Elias says that he started the day by inspecting the school- and daycare facilities in Kalasatama. Although this wasn’t a very exciting task according to him, it was still an interesting experience. Razmyar explained the details of her decision-making and the factors that are important to keep in mind while deciding on things that, in her case, affect an entire city. Razmyar allowed Elias to ask her questions about basically anything wanted and also gave me some general life-advice. Elias says that they had some very interesting discussions throughout the day, all of which left a definitive mark on his perspective of his life and future.
Surely these experiences can not be a bad thing for newly elected STUCO members and maybe we will see some of the new skills transferred to how our school is run.
