Halloween is a holiday celebrated in many countries through dressing up in fun costumes and having fun with friends and family through trick-or-treating, parties and other fun Halloween customs such as pumpkin carving. The holiday originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would wear costumes and light up bonfires to ward off ghosts. The name “Halloween” derives from All Hallows Eve, which is the evening before All Saints Day on November 1st, which was designated in the eighth century by Pope Gregory III as a time to honor all saints.
This year Halloween fell on a gorgeous gloomy Monday, which gave us the chance here at Mattlidens to celebrate with scary and creative costumes, sweets, and a traditional Halloween costume competition! This year, just like last year, there were many brilliant contestants. The terrific costumes were rated by our highly talented board of jurors, which consisted of our lovely teachers.
The competing costumes this year ranged from police officers to maids to celebrities to many more creative and original solo as well as group costumes! At Mattlidens we truly love celebrating Halloween to its fullest.
As one of the contestants of the Halloween costume competition this year, I can share my positive experience of this fun event. The atmosphere in the lunchroom was energetic and light, with everyone enjoying seeing the innovative and fun costumes each student had come up with. What made the experience the most fun was the involvement of the teachers, who also dressed up for Halloween! The competition was truly enjoyable to be a part of as well as to follow, as each contestant presented their costume after which the jurors shared their comments on it and voted. It was a great chance for students to display their creativity and have fun with peers and teachers!
Also, in case you're wondering, I went dressed up as Pitbull, AKA Mr. Worldwide. I know, very cool.
However, I didn't win, because the winner for this year's Halloween costume competition was Patrick Bateman from American Psycho! A very creepy yet extremely elegant and stylish costume.
Here are some other fun and notable costumes, such as The MaidsTM!
We also had a police officer on the spot making sure the competition was carried out fair and square.
Oh, and we also got to see some pollen before the start of winter! Really brightened my day.
However, that fateful day, we also experienced our nightmares coming true as IT climbed out of the sewer at school and joined us for lunch.
Even though we all have developed a deadly fear for clowns now, October 31st was a great day at Mattlidens as the students and teachers got to celebrate Halloween together (as well as safely in the midst of the ongoing pandemic), and we are grateful for this opportunity. Thank you to StuCo for organizing the event, giving us candy and decorating the school for Halloween! And thank you to everyone who dressed up and everyone who was there! Let's have as much fun next year.
