This unit examines Revolution in Russia, from the 1896 coronation of Tsar Nicholas through to 1927 and the end of the N.E.P. Students begin their study with Causes of Revolution (1896-1917) with the last Tsar, Nicholas II. Students explore key decisions, ideologies, events and leaders in this period such as the October Manifesto, Marxism, Leninism and the Bolshevik takeover. Students then examine the struggle in Consequences of Revolution (1917-1927) where they investigate the problems facing the new communist government including; The Civil War, War Communism and the New Economic Policy. Students will consider the role played by the Cheka, Trotsky and the Red Army and the significance of the Kronstadt Rebellion and the eventual death of Lenin and the rise of Stalin.
This unit examines the Revolution in China, from 1912 including the Wuhan Uprising, through to the Proclamation of the People’s Republic of China to the death of Mao 1976. Students begin with Causes of Revolution (1912-1949) and study the national first era. Students explore key decisions, ideologies, events and leaders including Sun Yat-sen, Marxism, the Chinese Communist Party, the Guomindang and The Long March. Students continue their study and explore the problems involved in Consequences of Revolution (1949-1976). They examine the struggles of the new communist government to establish a new order including a study of; The First Five-Year Plan, The Hundred Flowers Campaign, The Great Leap Forward, The Cultural Revolution, The Socialist Education Movement, the Red Guards and Mao’s last years.
