Course Information Evening for 2025 is Wednesday 6th August. Subject information is current for 2026
Students selected into the Sports Academy program must display a proven track record of a dedication to their learning and the ability and willingness to physically train at a high standard. Students will undergo a selection process in order to participate in this program. This process will involve students satisfying all selection criteria and may involve completing an interview with Academy Staff.
Due to the College’s strong links with community organisations, a significant portion of the program centres around trust and reliability both within and outside of the classroom environment. The Sports Academy aims to produce quality athletes & positive role models & leaders within our community. As a consequence, there is a heightened level of expectation across all levels of performance both inside and outside of school. These include in areas such as attendance & commitment to school, completion of school work, attitude & behaviour, skills, fitness and leadership. Our Year 10 Sports Academy students need to have a willingness to challenge themselves with a focus on continual improvement.
Squads offered in the Year 10 Sports Academy program will be predominantly influenced by student selections. Over the course of the year, students will complete units of work to prepare them for the skills required in both VCE VET Sport and Recreation stream and VCE Physical Education. There is a strong academic focus in the program.
The program involves 13 sessions each fortnight, with one double session of coaching, one double of fitness training/leadership and one double session of theory each week. The single session each fortnight is primarily focused on theory work.
Squads will receive specialist coaching and training as well as activity analysis sessions to enhance technique, strategies and tactics. Sessions will be taken by qualified personal trainers and coaches.
Various excursions to elite sporting clubs and facilities will be conducted throughout the year, which relate to both the theory and practical elements of the program. In addition, students will be involved in running community events, such as the GenU Big Day Out, primary school athletics carnivals and primary school sports clinics. These experiences raise awareness of diversity & respect, while allowing our students to develop a range of high-level interpersonal skills.
In semester two, students gain knowledge and skills to develop and implement a personal fitness program over an 8 week period, including pre- and post-fitness testing.
Topics studied throughout the year include:
Fitness, Feedback and Movement Analysis, Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation Techniques, Training Principles and Methods, Designing Personalised Fitness Plans, Fair Play and Ethical Behaviour in sports.
An optional camp that provides an invaluable learning experience with a focus on leadership, sporting and personal development perspective may be offered.
