How do artists use materials and techniques in their art making?
How do artists use materials and techniques to represent ideas and achieve a style in their artworks?
What role do artwork and their presentation play in society?
Outcome 1 and 2 focus on the students' artmaking skills and their exploration and experimentation with materials and techniques. The overall aim is to:
stimulate ideas
inspire different ways of working
enable a broad understanding of specific art forms explored
In these Outcomes students undertake learning that involves exploration of their own art-making with a specific focus on:
artforms
materials, techniques and processes
subject matter and representation of ideas
Their exploration and experimentation is documented in both visual and written form in a Visual Arts folio.
Outcome 3 is the theoretical component in which students learn about:
aspects of the role of a Curator in an Art Gallery context.
working in the role of a Curator the students investigate and research three Australian Artists to present information for a proposed exhibition.
The course involves visiting a gallery and a variety of exhibition spaces to support student understanding of how artwork didactic information is presented to visiting audiences. Students investigate how this information engages viewing audiences about the artists practice and artworks.
How are thematic exhibitions planned and designed?
How does an artist develop aesthetic qualities and style artworks?
How does an artist develop ideas and a personal style in artworks?
In this Unit students undertake learning that involves the development and resolving of their own art-making with a specific focus on:
responding to a set theme and progressively developing individual ideas
develop ideas using materials, techniques and processes
develop art elements and art principles in their artmaking
subject matter and representation of ideas
visual language
consolidation of ideas to plan, document and make finished artworks
Their exploration and experimentation is documented in both visual and written form in a Visual Arts folio.
Outcome 3 is the theoretical component in which students further learn about the role of a Curator in an Art Gallery context. They are introduced to the role of an Exhibitioner Designer and begin to understand the following:
How exhibitions are planned and designed?
How spaces are organised for exhibitions?
How artworks are displayed in exhibition spaces?
The relationships and connections between artworks in exhibitions.
This component of the course provides opportunities to engage with Art galleries and a variety of exhibition spaces to inspire students to design their own thematic exhibition.
They select artists from an exhibition and investigate and explore the artists:
context, background and influences
their application of aesthetic qualities to represent ideas in their artworks
their use of subject matter to represent ideas and communicate meaning
Outcome 1 - Explore – Materials, Techniques and Art Forms
Learning Outcome
Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and demonstrate how they can be manipulated to develop subject matter and represent ideas in art making.
Outcome 2 - Expand – Make, Present and Reflect
Learning Outcome
Make and present at least one finished artwork and document their art making in a Visual Arts journal.
Outcome 3 - Investigate - Research and Present
Learning Outcome
Research Australian artists and present information about them in a format appropriate for a proposed exhibition.
Examination - Application of the Key Skills and Knowledge from Unit 1
Outcome 1 - Understand - Ideas, Artworks and Exhibition
Learning Outcome
Select a range of artworks from an exhibition and other sources to design their own thematic exhibition.
Outcome 2 - Develop - Theme, Aesthetic Qualities and Style
Learning Outcome
Explore and progressively document the use of art elements, art principles and aesthetic qualities to make experimental artworks in response to a selected theme.
Outcome 3 - Resolve - Ideas, subject matter and style
Learning Outcome
Progressively document art making to develop and resolve subject matter and ideas in at least one finished artwork.

Students are required to have the following equipment for this course:
A3 Folio
A4 Writing Book
Basic Art Materials
Students will also visit galleries and exhibitions as part of the course in Unit 1 and 2.
