Tom Uglys Bridge


Tom Uglys bridge is for crossing St George River.Tom uglys Bridge was is a replacement for the punt, punts were used to cross the river but the bridge was a safer way to cross the river.


Tom Uglys Bridge was made in 1929, Which makes it 90 years old. Preach connect Sydney and southern Sydney together, So the residents of sylvania can go over the other side of the river towards sydney.


Tom Uglys bridge is 500 m long and 17 m wide. Northern end is 5 m apart and the southern end is 65 m apart. The bridge is a pratt truss bridge/ box girder. The construction of the bridge started on 26 april 1929 and ended at 17 october 1987.


Tom Uglys bridge is location is princes hwy, blakehurst NSW 2539. It is also south of sydney.


The bridge’s foundation stone was laid on 7 june 1924.Once it was opened, the money borrowed by the sutherland shire council would be repaid by a bridge toll. The toll was controversial as the use of the punt was free.


By 1929, two cable ferries were running and several hour delays on weekends and public holidays were encountered. The Government of NSW south wales loan to the sutherland shire council was used to finance to replacement of one of the georges river punt facilities.
