You will study Migration and Empire, the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Cold War. Ever wondered: How do we know what we know about the past? How do we know what we can trust? Why Britain became involved in the Slave Trade? What impact the Slave Trade might have had on Britain and Africa? Why Russia and the USA aren't allies? Why America was fighting a war with Vietnam and how peace was achieved? What so many Scots left for America and Canada? Why groups from other places around the world moved to Scotland?
This course explores the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. It examines classical ideas and values, comparing them to modern society, and develops critical thinking, analysis, and essay-writing skills. Key areas include classical literature, moral philosophy, and the impact of classical ideas on modern life. The course combines academic study with reflection on ethical and societal issues.
You will study Treaty of the Union, Democratic Britain and USA in the 20th Century. Ever wondered: Why Scotland and England joined in union? How union affected Scotland? Why women got the vote? Why we have a welfare system? Why Americans reacted badly to immigrants 100 years ago? How successful the Civil Rights campaign was?
You will study the American Civil War. Ever wondered: What the differences were between the Northern and Southern States of America? How important slavery was in increasing the divisions between North and South which led to the Civil War? Who won this war and why? (Military tactics and innovations) Why things didn't change for the better for African Americans after the war during reconstruction?
