Unique Context

MGS Profile

Our projected SIMD profile from August 2023 is shown in the table, with FSM expected to sit around 17% of our cohort.  This SIMD profile drives our need to develop a curriculum that offers all of our young people opportunities for success regardless of  background. Over 40% of our young people access ASN provision and just over 6% have English as an additional language. Included in our school profile is a significant number of young people in kinship care, who are care experienced.  We are a truly comprehensive school in nature and consequently our curriculum is designed to reflect opportunity for all. Staff have a detailed understanding of the social, economic and cultural context of our school and this knowledge has been used to shape our ambitious vision for the school. Our curriculum model has been designed around the needs of our learners.

Labour Market Information

We want our leaners to view our curriculum at MGS as relevant to their futures:  that they leave us with the knowledge, skills and characteristics that will allow them to be successful in their roles and lives beyond school.

Our curriculum reflects our school’s journey of continuous improvement, of ensuring that we offer equity of opportunity for all of our young people by creating learner pathways that equip them with the skills they need for life and work.

We are lucky in that our geographical location in east central Scotland offers a wealth of employment opportunities in a variety of sectors beyond school. It is our aim to ensure that our young people have the awareness of local labour market information and that we help them to develop the employability skills and attitudes that will enable them to thrive in the growth sectors within Edinburgh and the Lothians, as well as further afield.

Skills local employers said were essential when surveyed about future proofing our young people

We want our MGS curriculum to future proof our young people by providing regular and meaningful opportunities for them to develop these key employability skills so that they are prepared for the world of work that exists for them beyond school.

In planning our curricular pathways in BGE and Senior Phase we are mindful of labour market information so that there is a relevance to what we do, and that we make sure that relevance is shared with our young people.
