Community, Partnership and Collaboration

To enhance our curriculum offer in both BGE and Senior Phase we have developed a number of partnerships with organisations in our local community and further afield.   Some of these partnerships offer bespoke interventions for our most vulnerable learners while others are designed to engage a larger group of Senior Phase learners with subjects they would typically not have been able to access.

The Bridges Project work with a number of our young people in MGS to develop confidence and help them take their next steps in life and work.   They have also supported us in BGE, offering young people the chance to participate in 6 week blocks of Motorbike Training.  In session 2022-23 thirteen S1/2 learners have participated.

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland is a youth work charity and floating outdoor education centre. A number of our young people have engaged with their residential sailing voyages last session with more planned in the coming session.   MGS pupils were invited to their annual National Seminar to represent MGS to present on their experience of the voyage and to share the many benefits with volunteers/ stakeholders.

Army work experience residential has offered our young people an opportunity to explore areas of employment within the army that they may not have previously considered.  Six learners have engaged this year with a further ten pupils signed up for November.

Machina Coffee have been a key employability partner this year.

Newbattle Beekeepers Association has trained 5 staff over the past year in the Basic Beekeeping certificate.  Musselburgh Area Partnership funded the training for staff which qualifies them to have bees in school, as well as to deliver the NPA Beekeeping course.  We have 32 young people across S3, S5 and S6 who are working towards the award - this includes looking after the school hives as well as completing 3 units of work on the theory and practice of beekeeping.
