Chess

“Every chess master was once a beginner” - Irving Chernev

Eager little Junior Primary chess players gather in Mrs Whitehead’s Pre-School classroom every Friday afternoon, from 12:30 until 1:30pm. The beginner players have learnt the names and moves of each piece. Those players already familiar with the game continue to sharpen their thinking skills and strategies by playing other capable players. A love for the game of chess has been ignited, and we look forward to seeing more Junior Primary boys and girls joining in the fun next term.

Our Senior Primary Chess team played against Laddsworth and Cowan House this term. The bus trips are as memorable as the matches and strategies are spoken of during the trip to the destination and unravelling of the games played are discussed while returning to school. We travelled to Cowan House for the first fixture of this year. Both our Senior and Junior teams won 11-5 and 13-3, respectively. Our first match against Laddsworth, hosted on home ground, saw Clifton drawing against Laddsworth, largely thanks to our up and coming Junior players. We traveled to Laddsworth a month later and Clifton won 23-17.

Senior practice days are on a Thursday in Mr Wagner’s classroom, next to the Library between 2.00 and 4.00pm. The children are welcome to attend at the times that are most suitable for them.

We commend all the boys and girls who attended chess practices and fixtures this term. They can be very proud of their efforts and dedication.

Continue loving the game!
