The Rise of Communism in China
Starting around 1910, a series of events resulted in the expansion of communism within China.
Chinese Communism was no different from their Soviet neighbors and immediately began to collectivize farms & transform their industrial power. Mao Zedong, the communist leader, and his party owned and controlled almost everything in society; including property, means of production, education, transportation, & agriculture.
Mao's Great Leap Forward
The Great Leap Forward of communist China was an economic & social campaign led by the Chinese Communist Party from 1958 -1962. Chairman Mao launched the campaign to reconstruct the country from an agrarian [farming] system into 'collectivized' farms, & to create new factories across China. It was an utter failure.
Mao's Cultural Revolution
Mao’s power was weakened after the failure of the Great Leap Forward & attempted to regain his control. He did that by pitting the radical youth against China's older. generations. But this too had many consequences for Chinese society, at every level.
