India was politically fragmented since before the Islamic invasion. No sizable centralized government ruled over the whole of the Indian subcontinent. Hindu princes governed most states, while Buddhist kingdoms were most common on the island of Sri Lanka.
Islamic conquest placed North India under Islamic control, while central & Southern India remained under the control of Hindu rulers.
Before the 1300s, most S.E. Asian rulers were Hindu or Buddhist. As the power & wealth of Islamic merchants increased so too did monarchs in conversion to Islam in Southeast Asian coastal areas. Howver, Buddhism remained the state religion on the Southeast Asian mainland.
