People around the world developed a new sense of commonality based on language, religion, social customs, and territory [the characteristics of nationalism]. Often times, governments would foster a sense of unity, using nationalism; for both positive and negative goals. The 18th century marked the beginning of an intense period of revolution and rebellion against existing governments, leading to the establishment of new nation-states ('nations') around the world. Discontent with monarchist and imperial rule encouraged the development of systems of government and various ideologies, including democracy and 19th-century liberalism. This urge for freedom existed within the natives of these new colonies in the Americas, which led a series of rebellions inspired by democratic ideals. The American Revolution, and its successful establishment of a republic, the United States of America, was a model and inspiration for a number of the revolutions that followed; such as the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, and the Latin American independence movements facilitated the emergence of independent states in the Americas.

The Nationalistic feeling behind the image:
The American Revolution (1775 – 1783) was the first of several political revolutions in the Americas and Europe between the 1780s-1830s. The colonist’s defeat of Great Britain was the first successful overthrow of European colonial power & eventually inspired the rest of other revolts against their Absolute Monarchs.
The French Revolution (1789 – 1799) was not a revolt against colonial rule like the American Revolution. It was a fight waged by the French people against their absolute monarch and the privileges of aristocrats (wealthy landowners).
The Haitian Revolution was a revolt against French colonization & slavery in Haiti. In addition, Saint-Dominique (Haiti) was (1) the wealthiest colony in the Caribbean, (2) the most profitable French colony, & (3) the producer of 60% of the world’s coffee and 40% of its sugar!
The Latin American Revolutions were a series of revolutions against Portuguese & Spanish colonial rule in Latin America that lasted from 1808-1826. While the spread of Enlightenment ideas like republican government and personal liberty helped inspire the revolutions, they were not the primary cause. Instead, events in Europe pushed the colonies to independence.
