The Pax Mongolica
he Pax Mongolica, Latin for “Mongol peace,” describes a period of relative stability in Eurasia under the Mongol Empire during the 1200-1300s. The Pax Mongolica brought a period of stability among the people who lived in the conquered territory.
The Yam System
The Mongols set up a system of postal/relay stations every 20-30 miles apart in which relay riders, on horseback, could rest, eat hot meals, and feed their animal. At one point, there were at least 1,400 stations in China alone, and the messengers had 50,000 fresh horses at their disposal.
Before the 1200s, the Western & Eastern civilizations were aware of each other’s existence but did not often directly communicate. However, the Pax Mongolica will allow for greater communication between Europe & Asia.
