MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year, this year falling on January 16th. This day away from school provides us with an opportunity to explore the vision of Dr King and the work that continues to fight against racial injustice. As we celebrate Dr King it is important to continue reflecting on the hopes and dreams he shared with us before his passing in 1968. The linked resources are provided to support your work in exploring his approach to social justice and equity. In clicking the Begin button in the Freedom's Ring embedded site, you can explore in depth the concepts and details discussed in his "I Have a Dream" speech given during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963:

As part of the 2020 Technology Levy, classroom displays are being upgraded to Newline Q interactive boards. These devices allow for a greater range of instructional approaches in classrooms, as well as full integration with Google Drive and all our online curriculum.
By September 2023: All classrooms at Cascade Middle, Alpac, Evergreen Heights, Gildo Rey, Terminal Park and Washington will have 75” interactive displays installed.
By September 2024: All classrooms at Auburn Riverside, West Auburn, Rainier Middle, Hazelwood, Ilalko, and Lake View will have their displays upgraded.
By September 2025: All classrooms at Auburn High, Auburn Mountainview, Mount Baker Middle, Arthur Jacobsen, and Lakeland Hills will have their displays upgraded.
More information and training will be provided as your school approaches its scheduled upgrade. If you have questions, or would like to see a demonstration of the board, please reach out to your Tech Coach.
As the current inventory of teacher Chromebooks reaches the end of its life, the Department of Technology will begin the process of replacing these devices. Having listened to feedback about the limitations of the current devices, the new teacher Chromebooks will be a significant upgrade. They will remain touchscreen-enabled, with a built-in stylus, but have a much larger screen, more memory, and a more powerful processor (similar specs to a Windows laptop). See the full details on the manufacturer's website.
Elementary schools will begin the replacement process in the spring, with Secondary schools replacing their devices in the fall.
Thanks to the many staff members who tested and provided feedback on these new devices!
Every certificated staff member and instructional paraeducator can earn up to a $150 stipend every year for completing Online Modules on topics such as Google, Seesaw and STEM. Learn more here.
ASD has a new method for reporting suspicious emails and junk mail. Previously, staff would forward messages to postmaster@auburn.wednet.edu. The new method is to use the newly-enabled Report Message feature in the Outlook App which is also available in Outlook Web Access (OWA).
If you receive a suspicious or unwanted email, simply click on the "Report" button and select which type of message this is: phishing or junk. This will report the message and can prevent other staff from receiving it.
Staff may still forward messages to the postmaster account, however, reporting messages directly through the app is now the preferred method.
Further details can be found on Microsoft's Support Page.
Starting Semester 2, there is a new way to accept your automated Google Classroom classes. You will receive an email from Little SIS inviting you to confirm your classes in Teacher Review.
This new feature enables teachers to:
Accept or decline their automated Google Classroom classes,
Merge new classes together (e.g. if you teach two sections in the same period, you can combine the rosters in one Classroom)
Link a new class to an existing Google Classroom class (e.g. add your Semester 2 roster to your Semester 1 class, so that you can continue to use the same Classroom)
See the three videos below for getting started with this improved feature:
Any staff who have purchased a new phone, or will be buying a new one soon should reach out to the Helpdesk. The multi-factor authentication (MFA) app on your phone will need to be reset in order to function correctly.

Class Class Tech Tech is a primary-focused event, where teachers in the Auburn School District learn from each other about technology and how to best support their students with technology introductions. Similar to our TechConnect event, the sessions in this event are led by classroom teachers, intended to support K-2 teachers and support staff. Join your peers in learning how technology in primary grades can enhance, engage, and empower our young learners!
Did you know that there are many accessibility features built into the Chromebooks? These features provide both students and teachers with important supports. Here are some examples and how a student or teacher might use them.
Dictation - dictate a word you know how to say but are unsure how to spell
Select to speak - highlight a set of directions to hear them read aloud
Large mouse cursor - make it easier to see and track a mouse when presenting or recording
Highlight mouse cursor - adds a red circle around the mouse cursor to make it easier to see and track
Want to learn more? Check out Providing Accessibility with Digital Tools during the Winter Training Series. This session was designed by Steve Quist (Student Special Services) and digs deeper into how to find these tools, how to use them, and the many benefits for all students.
Securly Classroom is a great digital management tool for your classroom, and updates to the platform in December make the tool even easier to use. Here are just some of the updates:
New, informative class card designs
Assign different colors to class cards to help with multiple classes
Create default settings to apply whenever you start a class session
Share your block lists with other teachers
This video provides more information about these updates. Contact your Tech Coach for more ideas on how to best use SecURLy Classroom.

We wanted to give an extra special shoutout to Ryan Korn and his third and fourth grade students. Ryan is the first teacher to check out one of our available Sphero Bolt kits. The students explored right, acute, and obtuse angles through programing the Bolts on tracks mapped out on the floor. They started simple with an L-shape, moved to rectangles, and ended with student-created tracks using a variety of the three types of angles. At the end of the week, a student shared out that he always gets questions about angles on iReady and finally knows how to answer them! Interested in checking out the Sphero Bolts or one of our other robotics kits? Check out our webpage and talk to your Tech Coach.
Shout out to Rikki Stenson at Bowman Creek, whose first-grade class took part in this year's Hour of Code! Students were introduced to the fundamentals of Computational Thinking and block coding in order to solve challenges. Moreover, they had fun while doing it!
