In response to family interest in serving as partners in keeping our students safe and smart online, DoT releases the Securly Parent Portal to secondary students and parents this week. The Parent Portal provides a place for parents to see how their students are using their Chromebooks and set filtering limits for use at home. The Department of Technology sent an email to parents explaining what they will be receiving from Securly along with instructions for signing up.
Beginning next week, parents will receive weekly emails from Securly sampling their students' online activity and inviting them into the Parent Portal. If a parent is not receiving the emails, they should contact their school's registrar, or personally confirm that the correct email address is in Skyward Family Access.
For more information, please use the DoT Securly Website.
If you receive a spam email or an email that you think is spam or malicious, please forward the email to postmaster@auburn.wednet.edu for review by the Department of Technology. If it is malicious or spam, please use the following steps to block the sender:

3. Choose "Report" to report the email to Microsoft as junk or spam email.
Clever not only makes it easier for students to login to the tools they are frequently using, but teachers can also make a Teacher Page that is specific to their students. From here, teachers can add links to resources they are using in their classes.
For more information please check out Clever's Teacher Pages support website.
NoodleTools is an online research management platform that promotes critical thinking and authentic research. Students stay organized as they evaluate information, build accurate citations, archive source material, take notes, outline topics, and prepare to write. See your school's teacher-librarian for help getting started!
ASD uses the SAMR framework as our guide to improving technology integration in the classroom. SAMR stands for: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition, and describes the way in which technology is used in student work. For example:
Substitution - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change
Augmentation - Tech substitutes, with functional improvement
Modification - Tech allows for significant task redesign.
Redefinition - Tech allows for new tasks, previously inconceivable.
S: Google Docs replaces a pen and paper to compose the assignment.
A: Google Docs are used to share with the teacher, who provides comments and suggestions online.
M: Students collaborate in real time, online on their paper using Google Docs.
R: Instead of a written assignment, students create a collaborative multimedia product (e.g. a video or a podcast) which is published online.
S: The teacher videos the training exercise and uses this as the lesson.
A: The teacher videos the training exercise and has students watch it for homework, allowing for more practice time in class.
M: Students watch video examples and practice the techniques, then the teacher videos them batting on Flipgrid, where their peers can provide feedback.
R: The class produces a collaborative website detailing good baseball technique, with videos of their best examples.
To better support all ASD teachers, the Instructional Technology Team will be focusing on coaching practices and coaching cycles centered around technology integration. If you are interested in having either Michael (elementary) or Jen (secondary) work with you for co-planning, team teaching, observations, or starting a coaching cycle, please don't hesitate to reach out. Both Jen and Michael are excited to support you and your students in all areas of education!
The Department of Technology is committed to providing differentiated professional learning opportunities for staff. Certificated staff may complete online learning modules to earn competency "badges" for clock hours. Classified staff may complete the online modules for verification hours. Over the summer, the Instructional Technology Team created four brand new online modules. Each module is worth three clock hours and two offer STEM clock hours.
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month! Check out the following resources to share with your students about being safe online:
Thank you to Vickie Leaf (Librarian, Lakeland Hills), Art Spencer (Librarian, Arthur Jacobsen), and Erica Covey (Computer Science, Arthur Jacobsen) for serving as technology instructors on this month's Waiver Day. Vickie provided support for Classified staff learning Google tools... Art instructed library paraprofessionals in the use of Destiny... and Erica taught ASD CS102 targeting the use of hardware in the elementary computer science classroom. We appreciate all who signed up to learn, as well!
The Instructional Technology team is excited for the first year of ATLA 2.9! ATLA teachers have finished their first three (or four) days of professional development. In support of the district's new strategic plan, Cohort 9 empowers teacher leaders who will help push thinking and practices to leverage 1:1 technology to empower students in communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and digital citizenship.
To that end, this year's participants are working on projects that stretch and support their own instructional practices. Some teachers are exploring flipping their classrooms and gamification. Some are exploring enhancing student voice and discussion. Every participant is excited to share what they did and how it went during our January sessions! And we are even more excited to get out of their way!
Congrats to ATLA 2.9 for all your hard work!
