Over the summer, Google beefed up the Gradebook in Google Classroom and released it for everyone. This is a great tool to see who has turned in assignments and quickly access any assignment or student work without scrolling down. You can also adjust category weights by going to the settings (gearwheel) and scrolling down to "Grading".
Did you know that 64% of teens in higher-income homes say they use a computer for homework every day? According to the latest CSM Teen & Tween Media Use Report, that compares to 51% of teens in lower income homes. Similarly, by the age of 11, more than half of all kids will own a smartphone. The report also states that YouTube takes over 50% of all online video space for tweens (ages 8-12).
For security reasons, personal login information should NOT be saved in your internet browser(s). As a preventive measure to keep district information secure, this functionality will be disabled on district equipment over winter break.
Prior to winter break, it is recommended that staff change any passwords saved in their browser(s) to avoid challenges that may arise when this functionality is disabled.
During Thanksgiving of 2017, a virus effectively took out all of the PCs at two large district sites. Because some staff had saved the usernames and passwords of various personal accounts (such as bank accounts and personal emails), the virus stole these. This meant that some staff had their personal data and finances impacted. Changes to district settings will help prevent such damage.
Department of Technology is changing our district spam filter system to Microsoft’s Advanced Threat Protection (replacing SpamTitan) on 26th December, 2019.
If you managed your spam (junk) mail before using SpamTitan, here are functional differences with the new system:
Messages deemed spam are sent to your Junk Email folder in Outlook.
Attachments with viruses are removed but the text content of the message is delivered.
Messages containing malicious websites are sent to your Junk Email folder, but the web links are disabled.
Messages delivered to your Junk Email in Outlook do not need to be forwarded to postmaster@auburn.wednet.edu.
For further information on how to manage your junk Email in Outlook, please see the new web page on the Instructional Tech Website.
Art Spencer, teacher-librarian, at Mt. Baker Middle School participated in an online webinar conference on creativity, making, and programming to support all learners.
"For the past 3 years I've had 4th, 5th, and 8th grade students design and build assistive technology devices using Makey Makey boards for students with special needs. My students learn the design process, then work in groups to create buttons using cardboard, aluminum foil, and conductive clay. Special needs students then have success using a computer despite any physical limitations. This session will give an overview of that project and give tips on how do so something similar in your school setting." - Using Makey Makey to Create Assistive Technology
