In March of 2018, Google is ending support for the program which synchronizes files from your PC/Mac to the cloud. This will not affect Chromebooks or the main Google Drive service where you store your files and documents. You can continue to use your Google Drive in the same manner as before. The change will only affect the copy of Google Drive on your PC/Mac.
ASD will be moving to a new program called Drive File Stream which lets you save files directly to My Drive or Team Drive using a network drive letter, and allows you to open Microsoft Office files in the Google Cloud using Word/Excel/etc. All data can stay in the cloud and only be transferred to local hard drives when needed, freeing up disk space.
What will you need to do in preparation for this change? Nothing! The Tech/Innovation Team will work to make this transition as seamless as possible. The implementation plan will be released prior to Winter Break.
Why use your Google drive to retain files? Files stored on Google Drive can be accessed from a variety of devices, both within and outside the district. Google also provides a more efficient retention of files. If the need arises to restore your files on the T or U drives, the technology team will only have what is current from the past two weeks.
