3.22 Compensation for External Consulting Work

Outside Professional Activities

ASFG believes that outside professional activity can be valuable for both ASFG staff and the school. So that this participation does not conflict or interfere with responsibilities at school, the following guidelines need to be followed:

  1. Notification and approval of immediate supervisor
  2. The commitment of time towards outside work may not conflict with the staff members expected duties at ASFG
  3. The amount of time spent on compensated outside professional activity must not exceed 3 days per school year.
  4. Release days from ASFG will not be paid if the staff member is receiving additional pay beyond travel expenses from the outside organization. If there is no financial gain by the staff member, pay will not be withheld but personal days will be used.
  5. Avoid conflicts of interest by not using equipment, facilities, nor resources without prior approval

When ASFG encourages staff members to work with other institutions for professional growth which will directly improve ASFG programs, pay will not be withheld and additional days will be considered. (ex. AP Collegeboard, AdvancED, etc) These opportunities are considered professional development and not “outside professional activity”.

Additional compensation for presentations and projects at ASFG

Additional compensation for pre-approved short-term or occasional projects and presentations is allowed assuming the following guidelines.

  1. The work requested exceeds the expected duties of the staff member
  2. The work is pre-approved by the section director and Director General
  3. A one-time payment and fixed amount is agreed upon in advance
  4. The work does not interfere nor replace ones’ regular professional responsibilities
  5. The work is conducted outside of regular working hours of teaching and prep time. It is recognized that research or creative work may need to be done after hours.
  6. The staff receiving the compensation is highly qualified in this area. The staff member is a better choice than an outside consultant.

Additional compensation is not intended for employees who are simply working in excess of their scheduled hours to complete regular job duties

Full time ASFG staff members will notify their immediate supervisor when considering offering a professional development presentation at ASFG or at another institution or organization and compensation is a concern:

Internal Presentations: Professional Development Conferences, ASOMEX conferences or events hosted at ASFG, parent workshops

  • No monetary compensation can be offered or accepted. Appreciation letters or small gifts may be given by administrators to staff keeping within the boundaries of the ASFG gift policy.

External Presentations: (ASOMEX, Tri Association, AdvancED, External Professional Conferences etc.)

  • All external presentations or consulting work must be approved by the Director of Instruction and the section Principal
  • When representing the school monetary compensation cannot be accepted.
  • When not representing the school, monetary compensation may be accepted. When missing ASFG school days the presenter will either take a personal day or an unpaid day. All effort is to be made to miss the least amount of school days possible.
  • Compensation may be accepted when presenting after school hours.
