A teacher should NEVER leave his/her classroom unsupervised.
All teachers are expected to be at their assigned morning, lunchtime, and after school supervisions on time. You are responsible to walk around your area monitoring students and making sure no problems arise. Please make sure that students are in the proper area and not misbehaving.
Teachers are expected to attend all assemblies and special events during school hours as well as school related recreational events. Any teacher who does not have a particular role in the event is expected to help supervise and/or be a spectator and assist with student discipline. Please do not eat or drink coffee during student assemblies.
Teachers, even when not on scheduled supervision, are expected to accept and exercise responsibility at any time or place on school grounds in order to enforce effective discipline and maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
When supervising students and discipline is necessary, a faculty member should remember:
sarcasm diminishes children’s self esteem
corporal punishment of any kind is forbidden
standing students in the sun or outside in the corridor is not acceptable
sending students to the office for petty offenses diminishes a teacher’s authority
losing your temper in front of students is not professional; step aside for a few minutes, and if necessary, ask the office for someone to replace you while you regain self-control
sending a student to the library or taking away art, music, computer lab, band, or sports classes as a form of punishment is anti-pedagogical and not allowed
recess detention should allow time for eating, bathroom visit, and some exercise (ex. 10 minute detention only).
Follow the behavioral expectations for students as stated in the Parent/Student Handbook under “ASFG Rights and Responsibilities”.
