Extended Definition
Today, the word “sheesh” is more often used after seeing or hearing something that incites excitement or hype. According to the Merriam- Webster dictionary, the word likely came from the words “jeez” or “jesus” which are used to express surprise. “Sheesh” was recently popularized by a tik tok video of King Julio, a frog, with a crowd of people saying “sheesh” as the sound. This sound on the video became very popular and was used by popular tik tok accounts such as Lizzo, espn, and the ufc. The sound also has 81.7k posts with many videos having millions of likes and views. Later, creators paired this sound and recreated the “ice in my veins” pose, popularized by NBA basketball player D’Angelo Russell. Becoming a trend, both young and old generations posted tik tok videos with this sound and doing the pose. Younger generations began saying “sheesh” in a high pitched tone, like the original sound, to express hype or excitement. Today, the trend has pretty much died, but younger generations still use the word, often without the high pitch.
