"Brainrot" / "brain rot," a term used to refer to trivial internet/social media content of poor quality, particularly slang and memes, that is perceived to "rot" the brain of someone who consumes such content. The term also refers to the apparent effect of this content on the decline of a person's intelligence.
The term "brain rot" first appeared in 2007 on X (then known as Twitter), in a tweet by user @IzzyNeis that used this term to describe "shows based around engineered 'love' ".
"Brain rot" is also the name of a contractible disease in the 2011 video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; the disease impairs the player's ability to cast spells.
