Definition
Period, or pronounced by some, pee-ri-od-t, is meant to signify the end of a statement and sometimes even the end of a conversation. It is used to convey that the statement beforehand is true, and nothing more needs to be said otherwise. One can say it at the end of their own statement, or in response to someone else’s statement. In a way, it can demonstrate that our culture has become more stubborn, egotistical, and defensive. Period, leaves no room for argument or disagreement. It is simply, I’m right. End of Story.Â
Origin
According to Gaurdian.com, it originated in the “black, gay community and spread to the mainstream in the early 2020 on social media platforms such as Tiktok and Twitter”. Similarly, dictionary.com said, it originated within “Southern Black Gay Slang”.Â
