Origin: "The exact origin of the emoticon is unknown. The earliest entry on Urban Dictionary for "XD" was submitted by user Johnson on March 29th, 2003, defining it as a "laughing face." Over the next 12 years, the submission gained over 9,600 up votes."

Examples/Context: It is generally used as a laughing face and a text replacement for an actual emoji.

"XD" can also be used by itself as a reaction to what someone has said, or at the end of a sentence to express amusement.

The term "XD" currently in 2022 is no longer commonly used, and has been replaced by the term "lol" or "LOL” which is short for laughing out loud.
