With the development and spread of social media, sharing and consuming content has become more accessible than ever, allowing a multitude of users to grow a significant audience across their respective online platforms. While content creators are most commonly portrayed as lifestyle vloggers, the vague use of “content” covers a broad variety of people, such as video game streamers, musicians, chefs, visual artists, or comedians.
Content creators are often characterized as Millennial to Early Gen Z aged people who are obnoxious, shallow, lacking self awareness, and excessively taking pictures or recording things. Generally, attitudes surrounding content creators and the job’s legitimacy grow less negative among younger people, but it still isn’t seen as completely one way or another in the demographics that use it.
The term creator was coined by Youtube in 2011 as a catchall term for people who gained a significant following on any social media platform. Similar terms that are used alongside or in place of content creator may include internet celebrity or internet influencer. While the latter is typically seen as interchangeable to the consumer, it usually refers to someone who receives brand deals or sponsorships within the circle of content creators.
