Simp /Simping
Someone who does the most for an another person they are pursuing
Someone who does the most for an another person they are pursuing
First and foremost simp is meant to be an insult to whoever it is being called to. ‘Simping’ does not necessarily have a gender specifics, however, in most examples of ‘simp’ that I have found are used to describe a guy who is head over heels for a woman and allows himself to discard all of his values to basically doing whatever she wants. This is so the male has a chance of hooking up with her, even though there is no chance. “A man that puts himself in a submissive position under women in hopes of winning them over without the female bringing anything to the table” (Ryan). This definition is new with the resurgence of the word with popular social media app TikTok has popularized it once again. Simping can be used to describe someone who is in their feelings over a person they were pursuing or attempted to pursue.
Simp has a history that dates back to the eighties, “The word ‘Simp’ was first coined in 1985, after US rapper Too Short used it in his 1985 hit ‘Pimpology” (Rocks). It was used in opposition to the word pimp in their rap which associated simp with negative connotations. The word was used to describe someone that was overly infatuated by a woman where it allowed their behavior to be looked down upon among other men. Prior to this definition it was also a shortened version of the word simpleton which referred to someone who was stupid or naive. “The dictionary lists its first known usage as 1946, though it appeared in The New York Times as early as 1923.”(The New York Times)
Reddit thread: “I'm such a simp hoping you'll come back. How do I kill this false sense of hope that you'll change your mind and realize what we had was worth fighting for? Why does my heart stop when I get an alert on my phone? I know it isn't you...but still I hold out hope that you'll run back into my arms. I'm such a bloody simp.” (ManicMacchiato)
Quora thread: “Being a simp is common because alot of guys have zero game or confidence in talking to women, and they aren't getting sex; so they resort to being a simp thinking that's how you get her attention. News flash: It doesn't.” (Lee Everett)
My sister described my cousin as a simp when he first started dating this new girl This is how our conversation went a couple of years ago:
Lizzy (My sister): “Aaron is such a simp for Angie.”
Me: “Why? What's he been doing?”
Lizzy: “He drives her everywhere that she needs to go, and hasn’t been on discord since he’s with her all the time”
Me: “Tim just broke up with his girlfriend, he’s been simping pretty hard”
There are ways this definition could be misinterpreted. Looking over several Tiktok videos of creators explaining the definition to their audience, it is apparent that the definition is not one that many can agree on. Although the definition is specific to a male that is spending too much of his energy on a woman who doesn't like him back. I have noticed in my research that other people use it to describe men who are simply being kind and respecting women.
This definition could cause specific harm to the reputation of men who are simply doing the nice thing, and doing favors for the person they are yearning for. I think that the word has surged in popularity right now because of gender stereotypes. That men shouldn’t act a certain way or show too much emotion in a relationship since they are the ones that need to be the “provider”. Simp could possibly be a word that other men are able to use as an insult to those particular men who already have that certain level of respect and understanding that women should be treated as equals.
