Tilt = Performance decrease due to repetitive failure
Tilt usually occurs when someone is playing a game and repetitively loses or performs poorly which becomes a continuous state of anger and/or frustration that causes the players performance to drop further the longer they play or until they get lucky with a different outcome. Continuation of the game while tilted may lead to players having a melt down.
This word/term originated from pinball machines, players would often tilt the pinball machines when they were angry/frustrated with the game in an attempt to get better scores. People began calling this being “tilted” or “on tilt”. These days it’s used on poker along with chess and other games that may induce levels of frustration. However it’s now most commonly known in the gaming community, specially on online games. This term however is something everyone can experience.
Quotes:
“In poker, this could be going all-in on a weak hand after a losing streak. In gaming, this could be charging towards the enemy after they taunt you in chat.”
“Players that have recently lost 2 games, are statistically more likely to be worse players than players who have recently won 2 games”
“A player who is tilting will often be playing with tunnel vision”
“Tilt isn’t some anger management issue which only affects raging children. No game or player is ever perfect so every (somewhat competitive) player will be faced with difficult or unforeseen situations”
“These days, poker players most commonly use the term tilted, to describe players who are playing sloppily because they're salty about previous losses. However, tilted originated among pinball players.”
