(on an online dating app) to indicate that you find someone attractive or approve of them by moving your finger to the right across their photo
To swipe right is to show that you find someone attractive or approve of them. It is an act that you do on a dating app if you want to get to know a person better. The phrase originated from the dating app Tinder which came out in 2012. If two people swipe right on each other then a match has been made. Tinder popularized “swipe right” but it is also used in most modern dating apps. The phrase is commonly used by single people in their younger years (around 18-34 years old) when referencing an attractive person they saw. This became a common way to describe one’s attractiveness since a lot of people meet online rather than in person due to the popularity of dating apps. It is a phrase that captures how we as humans interact and form relationships with one another in the age of technology. Although it started off as a way to approve of a person, the phrase has found itself in memes, TikTok’s, and everyday conversations and is used as a way to show approval for anything really. The opposite would be to swipe left (disapprove of someone or something)
Examples:
"We met after swiping right on each other."
"If he has a fish in his profile, I don't swipe right."
Person A: "What do you think of this apartment?" Person B: "Swipe right, definitely."
