Definition: To cause (someone) to be angry or annoyed : to irritate (Merriam-Webster)
Origin:
The phrase is American in origin. The British version is “rub someone up”. The phrase originated from cats, who like to be petted from the head to tail and get annoyed with someone doing it in the wrong direction. The cat reference originated in 1819 in “Aunt Mary’s Tales”. There is another reference too about a plant in “A General System of Nature” published in 1806. (Source: theidioms.com)
This phrase is most commonly used when you don’t like how something or someone made you feel. You can’t always explain exactly how it made you feel but it bothered you. It is another way of saying you’re disturbed.
I think this phrase kind of takes away from the actual person feeling this emotion and how it makes them feel and puts more emphasis on the action that caused the feeling. The focus is on the situation of what happened. It makes you think of the situation and why it is wrong or upsetting.
It can be used in a much wider range of ages. Everyone can typically say it, but I would estimate it to ages about 18-45 years. It’s the peak/prime age of a person. Before or after those ages, it wouldn’t sound right with you. It is a phrase to be said while you are mature enough but still modern enough. I personally hear my 27 year old saying this all the time. She doesn’t like to claim her feelings are ever hurt, she rather use the phrase “rubs me the wrong way” to express something that caught her attention and it didn’t make her feel good.
The way Sasha hugged my boyfriend rubbed me the wrong way.
Danya: Isn’t that the guy that we met at your birthday party?
Bianca: Yeah but don’t be so loud, you’re making it so obvious.
Bianca leaves the room.
Bianca to Sessi: Danya just rubbed me the wrong way. I wasn’t even being loud.
Tamana hereeeee. Majoring in Nursing. I hate to say it because Nursing requires a lot of serious dedication and responsibilities. But I am such a non- serious kind of person. Jk. I am where it matters. LOL sometimes……. If I want to be.
I am the kind of person that can’t get anything done without my room fully clean and organized.
The kind of person to be late to every event but I will still be there.
The kind to order water with all my meals and still be dehydrated.
The kind to socialize and love everyone and anyone around me but will put you on my hit list as soon as you rub me the wrong way with the slightest inconvenience.
I am also the kind of person to go bald before I decide to quit.
I mean we are each the main characters of our own lives, right? You choose who you wanna be. And this is me.
