 Fall Sports Recap

by Rekha Goonesekere

Cony's fall sports season wrapped up over a month ago. Here’s a review of how our 2023 season went.

The cross-country team had another successful season. The boy's team placed second in KVACs, fourth in regionals, and competed at the Class B State Championship. Team captain Sam Goldey, who went into the race seeded fifth, won regionals in one of the biggest upsets of the season. “I wanted to get some faster times, but place-wise I was not expecting to win regionals,” said Goldey.

Junior Loralie Grady placed 8th in KVACs, 4th in regionals, and competed in the Class B State Championship. The entire cross-country team had a strong team bond, with each supporting the other and working as one. “I think we did a great job coming together as a team, even when there weren’t very many of us, we still had our best efforts. I thought it was great how the girls made signs for everyone! It was so thoughtful and made that meet a memorable one!” said Grady.

Golf had a stellar season this year with a bigger team and an undefeated regular season record (11-0). “The experience of states and seeing all the schools and all the cameras was my favorite memory. It was a good experience,” said junior Matt Boston. Other team members say golf cart rides and playing together were some of their favorite memories.

Volleyball introduced the new team this year following the graduation of many previous players. “Going off an entirely new team was challenging but we did a good job coming together as a team and growing,” said junior Cassandra Lewis, “Every single practice was a delight from having fun but also putting in 100%.” This season was a great building block for success next year.

Boys soccer faced a similar experience as volleyball with new players but also a new coach, Don Beckwith. “It was difficult adjusting to Beckwith at first due to his tough conditioning and unwavering expectations, but as the season went on, and we saw his ideas, respect was fostered,” Senior Captain Bryan Oullette said. “[This season] was very teamwork-based. I think we grew as a team more than in the past few years. Our season was a bit rocky but we’re looking forward to a good next year,” said junior Luca Hardy.

Girls soccer built up the team this year, achieving an exciting varsity win against Mt. Blue and a successful JV season. Sophomore Addy Gaxiola described the season as remarkable because of the existing team chemistry and the addition of new players. “Although we didn’t win as many games we ended up being able to score this season and grow better bonds than last year, “ Gaxiola said. Sophomore Captain Batool Albrahi said their halftime talks were some of her favorite memories. “I hope more girls come join and play,” said Albrahi.

Football had a record-breaking season this year, making it to the Class B Northern Championship for the first time in 10 years. Sophomore quarterback Parker Morin broke the state record for passing yards in a single game and wide receiver Parker Sergeant broke the school record for catches and yards in a season. Despite a rough start to the season, they worked through, ending with a 7-4 record. “Overall we had a lot of success with a pretty young team and we’re looking forward to building on that next year,” said junior Jackson Veillux.

The cheer team introduced new chants and a growing team this year, performing at football games, homecoming games, and pep rallies. “Homecoming week was the highlight for sure. It’s honestly what the fall season is about for us, promoting school spirit and getting ready for the game and the dance,” said junior Hannah Marshall.

Field Hockey had major success this season winning 3-0 at the Class B Northern Regional Championships against Belfast. “It was really exciting because our team as a program hadn’t won in 28 years,” said junior Abby Morrill. The players credit their team’s hard work and great chemistry for their success. “We had such a good team bond and from the beginning of the season, we knew our goal was to reach regionals and states. It was an awesome feeling to accomplish our goal,” said junior Hailey Johnson.
