2023 Cony Middle and High School Spring Band Concert

Reid DeJongh  5-15-23

Low brass struck the tone of Wednesday’s band concert during “Lightning Field” by John Mackey as trombones, tubas, baritones and baritone saxophones emulated the clouds and thunder of an approaching storm. While sharp flutes and muted trumpets mimicked the sound of lightning.

The Cony high school and middle school band concert was the culmination of the Symphonic Band’s season.

During the show, Band Director Russell Caverly recognized graduating senior students for their years of participation in the music program. He called each senior to the stage and presented them flowers and a handwritten note. He gave a short speech about their time at Cony between the songs.

“My favorite song has got to be ‘Steel’ because it has a lot of moving parts, it has some highs and some lows. It’s a very dramatic and moving piece,” said Tyler Foster, a senior in the trumpet section.

“Steel” by Randall Standrige is an energetic song that is supposed to remind the listener of steel and metal crashing together and banging around.

The concert went as planned with a repertoire of dramatic songs. The concert attracted a crowd of parents and students that was larger than last year.

“‘Alamo March’ has got to be my favorite song. I just really like marches in general. People think they’re boring, but I think they’re great,” said Ethan Tapley, a sophomore in the percussion section.

“Alamo March” by Karl King is a typical march with a strong bass line. The Trio towards the middle of the song is a great section that really pulls the whole song together.

The middle school band students played the Star Wars theme with some of the teachers.

They will have big shoes to fill next year with approximately one-third of the band graduating this year.
