HIGH COST OF LATE BUS CONCERNS CONY ADMINISTRATION, DESPITE STUDENT SUPPORT

Students and teachers are advocating for the addition of a late bus that would allow students to stay after school for clubs and help with school work.

A late bus at Cony would help students stay after school without the worry of not being able to get home. Bringing back a late bus is an idea Mrs. Silsby, the principal of the Middle and High school, has heard during school meetings.

“A whole group of teachers have been advocating for it for a while,” she said.

In 2010, there was a late bus but it was underutilized by students, Mrs. Silsby said.

If the school brought back the late bus, it would cost about $50,000 to operate for the whole year, she said. That is about what a new teacher would make in a year, she said.

Lydia Drisko, a sophomore, said adding a late bus for Cony High School would be a good option for students.

“They had one at my school and everyone used it,” said Drisko, who previously attended William S. Cohen Middle School in Bangor. “If you do that (it) would be so good.”

The late bus could also be used by students who have to serve detention afterschool, said Cohen Parker, a sophomore at Cony.
