Mr. Caverly, Band Director, Takes up Role as Honors Society Advisor

More than a month into the school year, there was no plan in place for who would assume the role as the new advisor for the National Honor Society, until Mr. Caverly stepped forward.

Mr. Caverly, the band director at Cony High School, grew nervous for the advisorless honors society chapter as the first weeks of school passed by, and it pushed him to volunteer for the position, he said. As a teenager, Caverly was a member of his high school's chapter of the National Honor Society.

“I wanted to make sure that the kids have the activity. The longer it went on the more scared I was,” said Caverly.

The new advisor is coming into NHS leadership with a strong sense of community. Caverly is involved with several community organizations, including the Lawerence High School Marching Band, and the Kennebec Performing Arts Company (a local band.)

This year he wants to focus on giving back and showing students that everyone can improve their community. Caverly said he looks forward to the NHS working directly with the community with less pandemic restrictions. He also wants to ensure that the club members are ambassadors for the school and NHS is the face of Cony, he said.

Caverly credits his focus on building community on his upbringing.

“I grew up on a farm … you start to understand how to help your neighbors… I remember people coming to help my family on the farm when there was a loss or something,” Caverly said.
