Key concepts for designing a sculpture:
Repeat and overlap
Use Symmetry
Select a section
Make holes to see through sculpture
Texture rough and smooth
balance
Shape and form
Change size and rotate
Stretch, bend and twist
You can combine any of the key concepts to create new shapes. Look at the Art department website to see how you need to show the development of your ideas.
Cardboard sculpture tasks
Task 1:
select an object/drawing and select half.
Use symmetry and draw the mirror image to create a new shape.
Repeat the shape 4 times and put them together from the central symmetry line to create a 3-D standing sculpture.
Task 2:
Select another object and repeat the shape, change the size and overlap it.
select the areas you want to keep using a dotted line.
Once you have the new shape cut it in half and then create a new shape.
copy the new shape 8 times and start to bend the shapes and join them at the ends to create a new sculpture.
After you have done both tasks, you can design 2 other ideas of your choice mixing concepts and drawings. Look at the examples below.
Task: Select a quarter from 4 different food drawings and put them together to create a new shape. Draw the shape in 3-D .
Task 2 above: Repeat, Rotate and change size
Task 3a: Symmetry, rotate, change size to create a shape/form
Development of ideas for cardboard sculpture based on food drawings.
Select 2 or 3 of your favourite Barbara Hepworth sculptures and use them in your development of clay sculpture ideas. Make connections to the work of the artist in your own designs.
Consider the following ways to develop your sculpture:
Select a quarter of 4 of your food observational drawings and put them together to create a shape
Use two different fruits or vegetables and cut the shapes into slices and rearrange
Consider colour, texture, shape, form and balance
Be as creative as you can!!! Do not be afraid to try out incredible ideas!!!! Have fun!!!!
Development of clay sculpture ideas-Artist: Barbara Hepworth
Inside and outside:
Hepworth said there is an inside and an outside to every form. Many of her sculpture explore both solid
shape and open space. She carved into and through her sculptures to explore both the inside and the
outside. She liked to pierce, tunnel and hollow out her forms.
Space and abstraction:
Hepworth explored abstract ideas about colour, line, shape, form, balance and depth in both her paintings
and sculptures. She liked to combine geometric shape with more organic forms and explored different
materials and textures to draw attention to relationships between forms, surfaces and subject.
Groups in space:
Hepworth made a number of multi-part and group sculptures. She explored the harmony and tension between separate but inter-related forms. This related to her fascination with human relationships and harmonious human interaction. She was interested in how people move in different spaces and in relation to each other.
Making a clay sculpture developed from drawings of food
Prepare a work in progress worksheet to note down process and refinement of ideas. Your ideas could develop into something representational or non representational. You could end up with a sculpture that does not look anything like your favorite food, but it has been developed from your favorite food.
You could bring your favorite fruits ,cut them and produce sculpture shapes to develop a clay sculpture. make drawings of the food sculptures.
Good examples of artists work showing different types of textures to develop your designs.
