Yr 9 Sculpture Project: Sea-life

Learning how to use coils

Six week project

All of the project will be produced in an A2 sheet of paper to get the students used to understanding the design process and the development of ideas. Working in one A2 sheet also gets the students better prepared for when they go on to GCSE Fine Art or Textiles and they need to annotate ideas and mount work, as this is a big requirement in the new GCSE Art and Design courses.

Introduction to clay:

Look at the work of artist Heather Knight. Select one of the 3-D tiles to copy using clay.

Remember to focus on joining the different sections to the clay base or they will not stick when the clay dries. (2 lessons)

Design options:

Bird house, sound amplifier, Oil burner, Mug, Candle lamp

Part 1: research page with drawings of the Sea life or natural forms (the page must be full of different drawings to be later used for the design process)

Part 2: Development of ideas- using the drawings develop some designs based on the design options. divide your page into four sections to develop your ideas. You can use some of Heather Knights textures for your project

Part 3: Select your chosen idea to develop your sculpture. You will be making a slab of clay to do your base for the sculpture and then use coils to develop the structure. remember to think about what the function of the sculpture will be (refer to the design options). 2 to 3 lessons making the sculpture.
