They can use Ipads to review the video, look for answers and search for Picasso’s painting, ‘Guernica’ or other work by Picasso.
1. A Response to a Tragic Event: The painting is Picasso's visceral reaction to the devastating bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica by German and Italian warplanes in 1937.
2. Monochromatic and Monumental Scale: Guernica is a massive, eleven-by-twenty-five-foot oil painting rendered entirely in black, white, and shades of gray, which gives it a somber and journalistic quality.
3. A Symbol of Anti-War Sentiment: The painting is considered one of the most powerful anti-war statements in history, not for its realism but for its emotional portrayal of suffering, chaos, and violence.
4. International Commission and Exhibit: The painting was commissioned by the Spanish Republican government for the 1937 Paris International Exposition to raise awareness of the war's brutality. It later toured worldwide to help raise funds for Spanish refugees.
5. A Symbol of Spanish Democracy: Picasso requested that the painting not be returned to Spain until democracy was restored. Guernica finally returned to Spain in 1981 and is now a major attraction at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.
