The project will be produced in an A2 Sheet of paper to get the students used to understanding the design process and the development of ideas. Working in one A2 sheet also gets the students better prepared for when they go on to the GCSE Fine Art or Textiles courses. They need to annotate ideas and mount work, as this is a big requirement in the new GCSE Art and Design courses. The student will get an A2 sheets of paper to develop the project, they need to be aware of this from the beginning.
The main emphasis is on getting students to:
Brainstorm and research a topic( topic, artists, designers and different cultures).
Work on the development of ideas and be able to review and refine an idea leading to a final response
Learn to annotate ideas, to develop a worksheet and to document work.
Be able to reflect on the work done through a final evaluation of the project.
Lesson 1: look at documentaries and presentation on Guadi and as a class produce a brainstorm based on natural forms and Gaudi and his work.
Lesson 2: look at the Gaudi and natural forms presentation. Research Gaudi and make a drawing of your favorite Gaudi sculpture/ building (click here for images).
Lesson 3: Research and draw images related to natural forms, refer to brainstorm for ideas of what images to look for.
Lesson 4: Select an area/section of your drawing and Stretch the selected section to make it taller like one of Gaudi's chimneys. develop 3 ideas and then choose 1. Add the shapes, textures and colour that you see in Gaudi's work
Lesson 5 and 6: work with coils to produce a sculpture. Annotate any changes which you have had to do in your worksheet.
Evaluation/process
1. Watch video on artist Gaudi nature.
Mind map
2. Visual research. Use Ipads to look for images from the notes taken to do drawings.
3. Development of ideas. Start to develop some design ideas. Consider the back and front of your design.
4. Select one design to start to make it out of clay. Produce a slab of clay for the base and then start to use the coils of clay to build up the shape and form of the sculpture.
5. Glaze the sculpture.
6. What would you have done better or what would you change?
Overlap, repeat, select sections, change the size, rotate, stretch, use negative and positive shapes or use symmetry. Students will develop 2 designs and then focus on one and explore the possibilities using 2 colours and think about pattern and textures
Lesson 9 and 10: transfer design to an A5 foam base and print the first light colour
clean the printing plate, dry it and add the textures and shading ( the more shading and textures you add the better the final print will be, due to the contrast).
Add the second darker colour and print ontop of the first light print.
Evaluate your project and comment on the process and what you could have done better.
