3-D Sculpture project: William morris clay slab boxes

The project will be produced in an A2 Sheet of paper to get the students used to understanding the design process and the development of ideas. Working in one A2 sheet also gets the students better prepared for when they go on to the GCSE Fine Art or Textiles courses. They need to annotate ideas and mount work, as this is a big requirement in the new GCSE Art and Design courses. The student will get an A2 sheets of paper to develop the project, they need to be aware of this from the beginning.

The main emphasis is on getting students to:

Brainstorm and research a topic( topic, artists, designers and different cultures).
Work on the development of ideas and be able to review and refine an idea leading to a final response
Learn to annotate ideas, to develop a worksheet and to document work.
Be able to reflect on the work done through a final evaluation of the project.

Lesson 1 and 2:

Students will use the research drawings on flowers done for the Printing project based on William Morris or research and draw some flowers to use for the development of the designs for the clay slab boxes.
using a 30cm ruler produce 4 grids (as above), each box will be 5cm long by the width of the ruler (3.7cm approx). In total 30cm x 3.7cm rows.
Using the drawings of the flowers the students will start to develop 4 ideas designs. each square represents a side of the clay box and the final 5th square represents the top/ lid (students will use the initial letter of their name to design this section.

Lesson 3 and 4:

Teacher will give a demonstration on how to prepare the clay to produce a slab of clay and produce a box.
Decide on the size of the bottom and top of the box ( do not produce very big boxes, as the clay becomes very fragile). do the bottom and then place on top of a slab of clay to trace the size.
using the size of the bottom/ top of the box think about the height of the box and the produce a slab of clay to cut the 4 sides of the box. You can place on top of a slab of clay to trace the size of each side.
Make sure you use the modelling tools or your fingers to join the sides and bottom of the box. You must not have areas where you can see the connection lines from one slab to another, as air will go through and when the clay drys it will fall apart.
Make a slab of clay to draw and cut the designs that you want to add in relief to the box. when joining the designs to the box, make sure you do not have areas where you can see the connection lines from one slab to another, as air will go through and when the clay drys it will fall apart.
Put box to dry and fire in Kiln

Lesson 5:

Produce an evaluation of the process that you have followed and add comments on what you could have done better and what you could do to improve your design.
Make an observational drawing of the finished box
Glaze the box and fire in Kiln
