Space is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is often called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art, when we create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.
Lesson 1:
- students can Set a still life: sweets/ food/ stationary (wooden cubes from art room) trophies etc or teachers can set a still life in the center of the room.
- Watch video on Space above
- start to draw the negative spaces only from observations of the still life.
Lesson 2:
- Continue with drawing
- for homework collect an image from the internet, magazines, newspapers, books or your own photograph and print it out.
- Lesson 3:
- cut out all the negative spaces and glue them down in your sketchbook to create a collage negative space study.

Lesson 4 and 5:
Design a negative and positive design using an A5 black piece of paper and scissors.
draw shapes onto the black paper and cut them out
stick the black paper onto an A4 white sheet of paper and then glue the black cut out shapes onto the white paper like a mirror image
