Financing war or gov’t programs: convincing civilians to buy bonds (i.e., loans to the government) and pay their taxes.
All-in as one people: the citizens of the nation are unified together in common bonds
Recruiting volunteers: the state needs soldiers to fight, workers to produce, and civilians to sacrifice for the greater cause.
Cult of personality: the leader is a special individual that deserves your love, devotion, and sacrifice
Enemies threaten all around: it is us versus the world...if we do not unite, it could have drastic consequences
Common Tools Used
Falsehoods & Half-Truths...involves deception or twisting the truth or parts of the truth to me more persuasive.
Abase as evil/demonize...portrays enemy as purely evil, menacing, and/or murderous; removes all ambiguity of the enemy.
Karicatures (sic) /demeaning humor...exaggerated cartoons to make the enemy look like a joke (Caricatures…I know…)
Emotional Appeals...playing on the people’s emotions, especially fear. A frightened people are more likely to take action.
Nationalism and Patriotic...nationalist language, symbols, and/or images that appeal to pride in one’s state.
Evocative Visual...symbols are used to appeal to the people’s emotions—flags, statues, mothers, children, etc…
Witty/Catchy Slogans...use of memorable phrases or selective key words to foster support.
Slander and Name-calling...using loaded labels to encourage hatred of the enemy.
