ARTIFACT: Safe Conduct Pass (Paiza) with Inscription in Phakpa Script
The inscription reads, “By the strength of Eternal Heaven, an edict of the Emperor [Khan]. He who has not respect shall be guilty.” The form of the pass (paiza), with its animal mask decoration, is similar to that of a Tibetan mirror for reflecting evil.
The basic type of paiza was issued to messengers (elchin) and was supposed to be used only on the Mongol Empire’s famous post-road (or yam) system. Such a paiza, as pictured here, gave the holder the right to receive room, board, fresh horses, and an escort while traveling from station to station on the yam.
