The 1948 Caterpillar was the second of two Caterpillar rides to have operated at Waldameer. The previous Caterpillar was sold to finance the addition of Comet. "Images of America: Waldameer Park" claims that it was sold in 1950, but this may not be true, as it also claims the newer Caterpillar opened at the park in 1948. It is unlikely that the park operated two Caterpillar rides at the same time (though that's not impossible), so there is a chance that the 1920s Caterpillar was sold sooner than 1950, or that the newer Caterpillar opened later than 1948.
This ride replaced the 1944 Whip, and was eventually replaced by Looper. It stood in the plot of land currently occupied by Tilt-A-Whirl.
Caterpillar rides were the ancestors to today's Music Express rides, and operated similarly, where a complete circuit of passenger vehicles traverses a circular track, providing centrifugal forces, though not to the same degree as modern Music Express rides.
